Twice each year the BID sponsors a street fair along River Avenue. Tens of thousands of shoppers grab a corn-on-the-cob or a new cd. Yankee fans mix easily with residents to create a family-friendly atmosphere. River Avenue comes alive with rides, games of skill and great snacks. Every year the BID sponsors two garden parties – one on Earth Day and one on Halloween. They both involve children from local pre-K programs, and they both celebrate nature. On Earth Day, the celebration involves adding plants to the BID’s Bronx Stadium Garden; Halloween features a mini-pumpkin scavenger hunt. The BID is always ready to, “Play Ball!” It provides bands, face-painters and giant banners for Opening Day of the baseball and pro soccer seasons. When a Yankee legend announces their retirement (Jeter and Mariano in 2014 and 2013) the BID conducts a block party filled with music, souvenirs and cake. Other special events include Soccerfest, the Pinstripe Bowl and concerts. The world-famous Jeter Meter announces each event in an electronic display on River Avenue next to the ballpark. Santa visits BID stores in the Concourse Mall and along E. 161st Street every weekend in December. Santa always is happy to pose for a picture and loves to see the faces of young and old alike when he hands them a candy cane.
